ROSENWALD.

American Jewish family of philanthropists. Born of immigrant parents in Springfield, Illinois, Julius Rosenwald (1862-1932) began as a clothing merchant and came to head Sears, Roebuck, the world’s largest mail-order firm. At his death it was estimated that he had distributed more than $70 million for philanthropic purposes. Black education and housing headed a list of causes to which he contributed.
